Khao Sok is home to one of the oldest evergreen rainforests in the world – even older than the Amazon. The National Park itself was officially established about 45 years ago but the forest ecosystem has roots stretching back to roughly 160 million years ago. The towering limestone cliffs you see today were formed by ancient coral reefs nearly 300 million years ago. Walking through this jungle is a journey back to a time when the landscape was still being shaped by the same forces that created the Himalayas. Jungle trekking in Khao Sok puts you directly inside it. Not from a viewpoint platform looking at it, and not from a vehicle passing through it. On foot, inside it, with a local guide who knows exactly what to look and listen for.
The forest covers over 738 square kilometers of limestone karst mountains, rivers, and dense primary jungle. Here, you will be face-to-face with wildlife in their natural habitat. You may encounter hornbills, green peafowls, deer, and even rare species such as leopards and gorals, an exhilarating opportunity for travelers from around the world to experience Thailand’s incredible biodiversity.
This is not a manicured nature walk but a proper jungle for adventurers and it rewards the effort.

Khao Sok National Park Jungle Trekking Options
We provide several jungle trekking Khao Sok tour routes led by licensed local guides. Each option focuses on different areas of the park’s interior.
- Half-Day Jungle Adventure (3–4 Hours): The half-day trek is the most accessible entry point into Khao Sok trekking. It covers the park’s core trail network through dense primary forest, with stops for wildlife spotting and flora identification along the way. This is suitable for beginners, families, and anyone with limited time. Expect giant bamboo groves, limestone outcrops, and a good chance of spotting macaques and hornbills along the trail. Duration is approximately 3 to 4 hours.
- Full-Day Jungle Trekking Khao Sok Tour (6–8 Hours): One of our most popular options. The full-day jungle trekking Khao Sok tour goes deeper into the park. More remote trails, longer stretches between clearings, and a greater chance of encountering wildlife that keeps its distance from the shorter routes. The full-day option suits those who want a proper physical challenge and more time in the forest. Hidden waterfalls and panoramic views of the limestone karst formations are highlights of the longer route. Duration is approximately 6 to 8 hours.
- Night Safari Trek: Not strictly a trek, but a natural extension of any trekking itinerary. The Khao Sok night safari takes you into the park after dark, when the forest is at its most active. Nocturnal species including civets, owlets, flying squirrels, and various reptiles become visible in a way they simply are not during daylight hours.
What You Might See
Khao Sok National Park jungle trekking gives you access to one of the most biodiverse environments in Southeast Asia. Confirmed wildlife in the park includes:
- Hornbills (multiple species)
- Crab-eating and pig-tailed macaques
- Dusky langurs
- Green peafowl
- Wild elephants (sightings are rare but recorded)
- Deer
- Monitor lizards
- Various reptiles and amphibians
The Rafflesia Flower: Khao Sok is one of the few places on Earth where you can witness the Rafflesia kerrii – the world’s largest individual flower. These incredible blooms begin to appear from November through April, with the peak blooming season typically occurring between October and January.
As one of the rarest sights in Thai nature, a sighting is never guaranteed, but our local guides closely monitor known locations during this window to give you the best possible chance of finding one. If seeing the Rafflesia is a highlight for your trip, we recommend planning your visit during the peak months of late October to January.
Discover why Khao Sok is regarded as one of southern Thailand’s most outstanding national parks.
How to Prepare for Khao Sok Trekking
What to Wear and Bring
- Sturdy, closed-toe hiking shoes that offer good grip. Trails can be slippery after rain.
- Leech socks. Strongly recommended for the wet season and longer trails. Leeches are harmless but common in the undergrowth.
- Lightweight, moisture-wicking long trousers and a long-sleeved shirt for protection against insects and undergrowth.
- Insect repellent
- Sunscreen
- Reusable water bottle. The humidity is significant and hydration matters.
- Small backpack
Difficulty and Conditions
We want you to enjoy every moment of your Khao Sok trekking adventure. The rainforest environment is unique; the high humidity and tropical heat mean even a short walk feels like a workout. While our tours do not require technical climbing skills, you will encounter natural obstacles like tree roots, shallow stream crossings, and uneven forest floors.
Choose the trek that best matches your comfort level:
- The Half-Day Option: Perfect for a relaxed pace with plenty of time for photos and wildlife spotting. This is the best choice if you prefer a lighter introduction to the jungle.
- The Full-Day Option: Best for those who enjoy a steady physical challenge and want to reach the deeper, more remote sections of the park.
Whichever route you select, wearing appropriate footwear and staying hydrated will ensure a great experience. If you have any concerns about the terrain, our guides are happy to adjust the pace to suit your needs.

All jungle trekking Khao Sok tours operated by Khao Sok Jungle Hostel follow Leave No Trace principles. Do not remove plants, disturb wildlife, or leave waste on the trail. Stay on marked routes and follow your guide’s instructions at all times.
